Preparing your CSV file is a crucial step to ensure your contacts are seamlessly imported into Webmecanik Automation or Webmecanik Pipeline. Here are the best practices to format your data without errors. 🎯
International Standard (Recommended Format) 🌍
To ensure your data is processed correctly across most systems, we recommend following the international standard. Your CSV file should feature:
- A header row: to define your column titles (e.g., first_name, last_name, email).
- Commas (
,) as field separators. - UTF-8 encoding to prevent special or accented characters from turning into unreadable symbols.
How to handle Excel exports (semicolons and accents)? 🛠️
In Europe, Microsoft Excel often exports files using Western encoding and semicolons (
;) as separators. This can cause issues for two reasons:- Accented characters in your contacts may get corrupted.
- Some import tools do not support semicolon separators.
💡 Pro tip: To easily resolve this, import your Excel file into Google Sheets, then download it as a CSV file (File > Download > Comma-separated values). Google Sheets will automatically apply the correct international format. You can also check if your source software offers an option to export using international standards.
Importing into Webmecanik Automation 🚀
If you cannot change your file's separator, don't worry—the platform adapts to you!
When selecting your CSV file in Webmecanik Automation, the interface allows you to manually select your field separator. You can choose the semicolon and import your file smoothly, even if it does not follow the standard format.
Managing multi-value fields 📋
Need to import multiple values into a single field (such as interests or tags)? It is fully supported!
To ensure the system separates these values correctly, format your cell using the vertical bar (also called a pipe):
|Required format:
"value 1|value 2|value 3"Here is a concrete example of how your CSV data should look with a multi-value field:
first_name,last_name,interest
John,Doe,"value 1|value 2|value 3"
